Members of the Youth Grant Allocation Board (YGAB) donated bags full of toys to The Salvation Army Angel Tree in December. Each month YGAB members have donated their time and money to help our community. The young leaders chose The Salvation Army Angel Tree because they wanted to make Christmas morning a little brighter for needy families by bringing smiles to the faces of their children.

The tradition of The Salvation Army is an integral part of Christmas, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors and the homeless. Donations to The Salvation Army provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for children. According to Major Ted Morris, Director of The Salvation Army in Mobile, The Salvation Army served 1,900 families this past holiday season and distributed more than 5,000 toys.

JANUARY 2010
Fellows From University Of Alabama Blackburn Institute Visit Bayou La Batre

On a bitterly cold, windy day in early January, more than 40 fellows from the University of Alabama Blackburn Institute traveled to South Alabama to view the long term recovery of the Alabama Gulf Coast from Hurricane Katrina. With scheduled stops in Bayou La Batre and Gulf Shores, the Fellows met with citizens and community leaders to discuss education, workforce development, healthcare and disaster recovery.

The Cambodian-American Community near Irvington graciously provided meeting accommodations for the Fellows to learn more about the impact of Hurricane Katrina on South Alabama. Thomas Davis and Michael Dillaber from The Community Foundation of South Alabama spoke to the group about "Dealing with Disaster". The Community Foundation has invested more than $2.6 million in the long term recovery efforts of South Alabama. Projects that received funding from the Foundation included healthcare services for the poor, work force training for displaced workers, and disaster recovery efforts.

The Alabama Association of Nonprofits, formerly known as the Nonprofit Resource Center of Alabama, held a meeting in December at The Community Foundation of South Alabama to announce changes in the organization to create a unified voice for Alabama nonprofit organizations and to enhance services to its members. The statewide members of the Alabama Association of Nonprofits represent more than 19,000 nonprofit organizations in the state.

The priorities of the Alabama Association of Nonprofits include professional development opportunities for members, group buying power, and advocacy for state nonprofit sector issues. The Association has entered into a partnership with Samford University Brock School of Business, and will move operations to the campus. The mission of the Brock School of Business and the Association are closely aligned, due to curriculum which is focused upon businesses and nonprofits that are socially responsible and mission driven.
